Danielle

“REVIVE MAKES PEOPLE FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE A LIFE.”

Danielle is resilient. She first came to ReVive’s attention because she panhandled on Ogden Avenue. Her strength was evident in the fortitude it took to stand for hours in the cold. When she came inside and got to know us, she told us, “I take in sad things; I put out something positive.” That is quite remarkable, knowing her story.

Danielle first experienced homelessness as a kid. In high school she lived a double life, trying to hide the fact that she often didn’t know where she would sleep. Danielle relied on her older sister to find them a couch or an extra room. When her sister died, it was all too much. The impacts of childhood trauma, mental illness, and physical injury keep a grip on her.

ReVive’s Engagement Center is designed for people like Danielle. It gave her a place to come in off the street and be warm, to have a cup of coffee and something to eat. ReVive staff welcomed her, treated her with dignity and viewed her as whole person, not a problem to be solved. With that trust, they connected her with health care, clothing and food, and finally with an apartment of her own in South Shore.
