Thrift Store Adds Hours, Renovates

June 21, 2007

Second Chance Thrift, Cathedral Shelter’s thrift store located at 1668 West Ogden Avenue, expanded hours of operation to include Saturdays. The store is now open every Saturday from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, in addition to our regular weekday hours Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm.

These new hours are part of Cathedral Shelter’s efforts to make shopping at the store easier and more enjoyable.

A year ago, the store doubled merchandise space by moving into underutilized space in the building. Increasing the floor space allows the store to better display the bargain-priced furniture, home décor, and clothing for sale.

This past December, Advance Specialty Design Class students at the Illinois Institute of Art completed and presented a renovation plan to spruce up 10-year-old store. The plan includes new fixtures, paint, lighting, signage and floor plan.

“All of these changes are making a good store a great store,” says Jeanette Patrick, store manager. “We’re very hopeful that the renovation will happen soon.”

Proceeds from the store’s sales help fund the programs and services of Cathedral Shelter of Chicago. Homeless individuals and families in crisis are eligible for thrift store vouchers which allow them to shop in the store for needed items at no cost.

Cathedral Shelter is seeking donations of labor, store fixtures, lighting and merchandise displays to help make the renovation a reality. Please call Kevin McCullough at (312) 997-2222×241 for more information.
