Second Chance Thrift Renovations Continue

May 30, 2008

Second Chance Thrift, Cathedral Shelter’s thrift store located at 1668 West Ogden Avenue, continues its efforts begun two years ago to make shopping at the store easier and more enjoyable.

The changes began with the store doubling merchandise space by moving into underutilized space in the building. Increasing the floor space allowed the store to better display the bargain-priced furniture, home décor, and clothing for sale. In December, Advance Specialty Design Class students at the Illinois Institute of Art completed and presented a renovation plan to spruce up 10-year-old store. The plan included new fixtures, paint, lighting, signage and floor plan.

With the generous donation of professional services, fixtures, and labor, the plan is becoming reality. Shoppers will soon be able to enjoy an open floor plan, better lighting, and new dressing rooms.

Proceeds from the store’s sales help fund the programs and services of Cathedral Shelter of Chicago. Homeless individuals and families in crisis are eligible for thrift store vouchers which allow them to shop in the store for needed items at no cost.

Look for the store to reopen in early June with a reopening celebration in July!
