2008 Christmas Basket Season
December 17, 2008
Best of Chicago 2008 award winner Cathedral Shelter of Chicago helped a record 1,526 struggling families, seniors, and homeless individuals celebrate the holidays this year through its annual Christmas Basket Program, which ran from December 1-16. The program has helped Chicago communities for over 87 years by providing those in need with gifts for the holidays and provisions for holiday dinners.
The Christmas Basket program depends on the contributions of 45 Episcopal parishes, 10-17 corporations and schools, and over 200 unaffiliated individuals around the Chicago land area.
Andrea Ware, an Australian native who volunteered this year’s Christmas Basket Program said, “What surprises me most is that even in these uncertain economic times, there are people out there that have found it in their hearts to dig deep and give.” For Andrea, this year’s program represents one of her first Christmas experiences in the United States.
